I'd bet it needs the box if it's from 69...might not but, the age is right for having the box. I think it was the Sun Super tach II's that didn't need the box.

My dad's got an original Sun tach on his 57 Chevy with the box, plus it takes a couple of batteries inside the tach too. Almost AA size but not quite.

Vintage speed parts like that are High dollar items. Finding the right box will prove to be expensive. Start looking on Ebay...
