1984 shouid be the first year for wipers on the column. The 82 column should be a plug and play in a 79. Are you swapping between tilt and non-tilt by any chance?

My experience has been that the two connectors on the main body of the column are oriented exactly opposite between tilt and non-tilt. I have been able to overcome this by twisting the dash wiring harness to mate with the column.
