Did he happen to mention what is different between a Corvette control valve and a truck one? NAPA lists the same control valve for '65 Chevy pickups and '79 Corvettes (NSP 526623). As far as your excessive play is concerned, you basically have to check everything, tie rod ends, idler arm, ball joints, wheel bearings, and steering box. There should be some play in the control valve where the Pitman arm attaches to it, but not too much. Does the power steering work? If the control valve is bad, sometimes you only have assist in one direction, it might be stronger in one direction, or it leaks. Also, an out-of-adjustment control valve can cause the truck to pull to the right or left.
