I'm Charlie's buddy/roommate. We went to look at the 68, and it was definitely not as nice as we had thought. Doors rusted out on the bottom, rotted rockers, and the bed was growing grass (just to name a few...there were many other issues).
The search is tentatively completed to get him a project though. There is a 68(ish) GMC with a nearly new GM goodrich engine in it. $500 is a good price for as straight of a truck as it is. It needs wiring (I'm fairly sure that someone installed the battery backwards...easy to do when some ham fisted mechanic uses red for the ground and black for the hot wire), but with the total of what...8 wires in the truck? Shouldn't be too bad.
So, with a new motor for my truck, and some wiring for his, we'll have some pretty kick ass old GMC iron in the yard.
