If your 70 C10 is like my 70 GMC then your running the idiot light dash I guessing. I plan on changing mine out also. Hook the line into the gauge and have someone blow forced air through it with a compressor nozzle. Spray each joint with some soapy water in a spayer bottle. If you see bubbles then it's leaking. It's the same way to check for leaks on propane lines & welding hoses. I don't think a little air will hurt your gauge any as long as you keep the pressure at a reasonable rate.
