I believe you'll find the cable end is not straight and fits into a level inside the tranny. If you take the pan off you should see the lever I am referring to. You feed the cable throught the hole in the tranny case, hook it to the lever and then bolt the cable housing to the tranny case. There should be a gasket/o'ring on the cable mounting fixture.
