an update to the saga. I charged the A/C and before I could get a full charge, the head pressure was approaching 300 PSI. I've deternimed that I don't have enough airflow across the condenser. SO out with the big single electric fan and in with a dual fan/shroud setup. The one fan was plenty to keep the engine cool, but not enough for A/C too.
