You did everything close to correct. Jack one side of rear end up, tranny in neutral. Turn free tire 2 complete revolutions. If drive shaft turns less than 3 full turns, it is 3.0:1 (2.73, etc.) or less. Barely more than 3 turns = 3.07. Close to but not a full 4 turns = 3.73 or 3.90. No, this isn't an exact science, but gets pretty close without opening the rearend up.
