Small blocks were an option in this year trucks, and the mounting points haven't changed. All he'll need is the V8 engine mounts for his truck.
My personal recommendation would be an early 90's Vortec engine. The vortec heads are about the best you can get for that generation, it may already have a TBI manifold on it and roller lifters. The block itself will be basically the same as the '60s block, so he won't have to worry about bell housing patterns or reverse flow plumbing or anything.
