Your rubber line was probably hitting it and you never realizrd it.. at least that's my experiance.
You can buy a new plastic air filter spacer at most of the parts stores, or in the junk yard on any chevy van from the 70's or 80's, the taller the spacer, the more likely you'll need a new stud though...esp if you go the van route.
