Well here goes, it's another one of those exhaust size debates. Many differing opinions of what diameter for a particular size engine.
In increasing the pipe diameter you will reach a point where exhaust scavenging falls off and can hurt the performance rather than help. Keeping up good flow helps low end torque. I think on a stock 283 anything more than 2" duals is overkill. It will make more noise but it may not make any more power from it.
I know someone will chime in here with the correct formula to determine the necessary exhaust size and configuration.
