the tool to remove the lock ring is a must since it is cheap. the reason you lost the key function is the aluminum rack (half of a rack and pinion setup) has broken. if you need to use it till you get it fixed you can remove the dash bezel, maybe just the cover on the bottom to access the rod that goes down to the switch. I used mine this way for a long time and it will get you out of a hole. you will need a small long point vice grip which will hold to the rod and reach down under the dash. to start you will pull up on the rod and just push down to stop the engine. hope this helps.
