I thought it was a deal with length. When a driveshaft gets to be longer than a certain length, they make it a two piece with a carrier beaing.
Having said that, when I took out my 1/2 ton rear end and installed a 1 ton rearend I upgraded to a 3.5" thick wall 1350 driveshaft.
Mind you, this is on a longbed pickup.
Some of the local driveshaft shops told me it would be too long to have a 1 piece and that it needed to be the carrier bearing design, but it's worked great.
