Actually I was thinking of doing the same thing. using a masonite backing dampen it to get it to mold into place let is dry that way. Then use healiner glue and add the 1/4 in foam padding then then colored vinal. You can recess or raise logos or desing in the foam to get creative. Then if needed add some 1x1 or 2x2 for some strength and then either fiberglass or bondo the masonite to the top and use velcro tape on the back to assist. I used to do this to hot rods in the trucks of 32 roadsters.
