Run a wire from positive of the battery to the positive of the coil. This will let know if there is a problem with the wiring to the ignition switch or firewall wiring. Make sure the wire is easily disconnected as that will be the only way to shut it off if it starts. Also if there is any bad spot in you fuel or bad fuel pump line between the tank and the fuel pump, the carb may not be getting enough fuel to start. and have a fire exting. handy just in case!! Also a cheap upgrage is to get a electronic ignition from a junk yard or ebay, they usually run about $60 for the coil and distributor
