My 30" glasspack blanks are like that, one good and one rusted, though not holed through. I can only guess it was caused by my daily short trips to work & back home, so of course the exhaust never gets got enough to dry out -- coupled with the heat riser directing some of the exhaust to one side. I've since removed the heat riser, but the damage has been done.

As to backpressure, it could be a problem for you if the muffler has collapsed internally. No mufflers/open headers should not be considered for street/highway use, imho.

I'm getting close to replacing my mufflers. Suggest the same for you.
