Re: 1969 Chevy commercial - Google Video

When these trucks were new, I wasn't even thinking about a truck. I spent the first six months of '69 on the island of Taiwan. The last month of '69 I spent in VietNam. I don't remember being swayed by any of the new '69's, although I recall that the Grand Prix was a new body style, followed by the Monte Carlo as a '70. I was the caretaker for a '68 SS396 El Camino, that was a chase vehicle for the U-2 spy plane. It was a 350horse 396, TH350, painted USAF blue with a white top. Otherwise, it had all of the usual SS stuff. It had steel wheels with small caps and Firestone WideOvals in black. Vinyl bench with column shifter. No power brakes or power steering, as I recall, although I may be wrong about the P/S. It did have a Kyzer A/C unit mounted on the roof, like the big trucks of the day had. Then, it also had a 24-volt electrical system to power the aircraft radios that we had in it. Try to get one of those to run on Mogas!! Still the fastest thing on land at Bien Hoa AB!!
