I bought the bed for my 70 GMC from Texas, and the wood was pretty rough. I guess it all depends on how the previous owners treated them? I'm replacing mine with oak wood and stainless hardware. The wood needs a final sanding and polishing. I used Marine Polyurethane to cover the wood. Great UV rating and stands up to water? Here's a pic of what the wood lookes like now.
