I would guess that if he didn't have door key he wouldn't want to lock the door anyways!! The door locks don't work in the way that newer vehicles work- it keeps the button from going in- not the latch from unlatching. You could get a hood latch from a mid 70's or newer truck that has the cable release on the inside and modify it to work. You could also install different latches in the doors to make them operate in more of a modern manner.
