Got the transfer case out today. PO told me the adapter was cracked and leaking trans fluid into the transfer case.
I think maybe the seals are bad since the adapter appears to be in good shape. I think I'll rebuild the trans while I'm in this far.

Made a little fixture with some angle iron and the welder to keep the TC under control on the floor jack.
