Re: if you havnt changed you rear end gear oil since the 70's you may have this...

Do the best you can to get the junk out, fill it with good gear oil, run it for 100 miles and drop it again. When you drop it the second time make sure the fluid is at operating temp so it will flow better and the contaminates will be suspended in the oil. Refill will good gear oil and keep your fingers crossed...
