307 hissy fit?

hey all.

my 307, which ran very reliable, albight rich, decided it doesn't want to run anymore.

First issue. it'll run when i'm cranking - that is, it'll fire, but as soon as i get off the eky, it dies.

second - the wiring along the top of the firewal started to smoke. i traced it to a wire splice that wasn't coated - i think.

third - i sprayed some cabr cleaner down the hatch, along with working the throttle to see if there were streams of fuel going in (there was), and tried cranking over. there was a loud *POP*, and then it would just crank. so..back fire.

i dunno what the issue is. i'm thinking maybe my plugs and wires are shot?

any insight would be helpful, so..yeah,. thanks in advance! i appreciate it.
