Very possible. Another possiblity is the dustcover rubbing on the flywheel when the clutch is depressed. Usually see this on high mileage engines with a worn out thrust bearing. When the clutch is engaged it shoves the crankshaft forward enough to make the flywheel rub the cover and or Starter nose cone.
