I agree with your final assessment. I bought from Auto Zone and the gauge at least works now, but is a bit low on Temp, I suspect. GM Parts are the way to go. I always ask for any discounts just about every place I go. I asked the local Chevy dealer here if they supported the company I worked for and they said , YES, we have a discount for you. Never hurts to ask. Paid the taxes.
That guage is not easy to service and makes a bit of a mess when you uncork it. I changed mine out since I had the inner fenders out for paint. I hate to do things TWICE.
