Welcome to the board- it sounds like you have a good attitude toward learning how to do your own stuff. I was in a similar place a few years ago, now I've done loads of mods/fixes including building a motor, with a LOT of board help. But I'll always be a hobbyist, lots of guys here do/have done this for a living.

Hi Todd - I never knew that you weren't supposed to hook the timing light to the negative battery... I've always seen it done that way. Oops.
I've found a ton of support here too and some great troubleshooting answers to my issues. I am so glad to be here! Everyone is so nice and great.
Cartman - I'm glad you helped me find the answer. Better that it be discovered in a shop than blown up on the side of the road!
