Vet- i cleaned the electrical terminals and ground strap but no difference. i think 31 years of service has just wore it down but thanks for reminding me to try the basics first.
Just one little thing to add to what VetteVet said...If you have a DVOM, check the voltage at the motor when it's on high speed. There could be a voltage drop somewhere other than at the motor or ground. You should have close to battery voltage on the high speed winding (make sure you are grounding your meter to a good ground like the neg. post of the battery).
