I think welding is a bad idea. If you ever damage a fender you would have to replace the fender and a bedside. You would never be able to remove it. If both surfaces are painted some of the orginal dumb dumb would work. I went with the beaded felt. Lots less messy. It would also be hard to weld the top of the fender without taking a chance of burning holes in it.
