sounds to me it could be worn linkage or out of adjustment. my 53 ford coupe had the same problem till I installed a floor shift. tight linkage is important in a three on the tree. very simple and very complicated at the same time. start with that first as it is the easiest tho check and dig deeper from there. hope this helps you out, good luck
