I haven't done this yet, but I plan to. For a backer, I'll be using 1/8" masonite. It's cheap, fairly durable, and easy to work with. For finishing, I'll first glue on some fairly dense polyurethane foam thats 1/2 - 3/4 inches thick and probably score out some vertical ribs. I'll then go to my local furniture store and order some upholstery material and glue that on too. Haven't figured out how to mount them yet, but with a little searching I'm sure to find a suitable post and socket type of dooey-bob that will be concealed on the backside of the panels.
