hey man, this is my first t ime back to this forum in a very long time. anyways, i just went through the same thing with my 76 stepside yesterday. but heres what i learned:
1. before droping the tank removed the bolt that holds the grounding lead from the fuel tank. make sure there is a good ground. remove any rust and have a good metal to metal contact.
2. if that doesnt fix it follow the signal wire to ensure the there is no short (chaffing or cut) on the wire that goes all the way to you cluster board.
3. if that no worky, then drop the tank, remove the sending unit, disconnect the wires (and be sure to lable the fuel lines....unlike what i did, it'll save you time) and take an ohm meter from the main signal termal to a ground on the sending unit itself (pretty much anywhere). with the ohm meter leads attached move the float up and down and check for a reading at about 0-90 ohms.


in your situation, it sounds like the ohms are too high and the rehostat in the float is shot. that would be my guess.

ps. if the sending unit is bad...when you go get the new one....use the ohm meter when you first get the part at the store (which was my problem yesterday) it'll save a lot of frustration
