He painted the wood the same color of his truck. After it dried, he sanded the paint off, and clear coated it with some type of clear stain.
The grain retained the color of his truck.

Thanks for sharing the idea...we may have to give it a try on the next one. I'm pretty conservative, so we went with red oak with clear-coat, even though the factory fit and finish was southern yellow pine with a mix of flat black paint and kreosote-type material and the wear strips were painted black from the factory.
