Turbo 350 question

As some of you know, the th-350 died in my 'burb.

I was talking to a friend of mine that said that the output shaft on the back of the TH-350 could be removed and replaced without disassembling the tranny. How is this done?

The reason I ask is: I have a working TH-350 out of a 2 wheel drive, but the 4-wheel drive has a (much) shorter output shaft to go into the transfer case.

Anyone know for sure? I thought that the tranny had to be disassembled in order to change the output shafts.
