I couldn't believe how easy it was. I bought one from S-10 warehouse on ebay, very knowledgeable folks. All S-10 dashes are plug and play. It doesn't matter if it's a 2.2 or 4.3 or tach or no tach. The only thing that does matter is a 98 will only work in a 98, 99 only in a 99, but the 00-'03 will interchange with other 00-03 dashes. The only thing you want to watch for is if it was an auto or a manual. Your dash would look goofy if you have PRND321 on your dash if you have a 5 spd

The tachs have different red-lines, but who red-lines a stock 2.2 or 4.3???

I think the 2.2 is 5500 and the 4.3 is 5200.
Anyway, I bought a 99 dash out of a 4.3L 5 spd truck with 97K on the clock (mine is getting close to 93K) and I plugged it in last night and rode around house hunting for an hour or so. Everything seems to be spot on, tach, speedometer, voltage, water temp, oil pressure. The only thing that was "off" was my fuel gauge which was reading about 1/8th lower than it was reading on the other dash when I plugged it in. I hate to pull it back out, but I want my truck to have the correct mileage, so I can reinstall it in a few thousand miles. I'm taking the truck to NY next month, so that will probably be 1,600 or so miles by the time I get there and drive around for a while.
Pretty cool
