I thought about that, but my old dash was beat up around the front top area. I have already removed it.

Why not cut it across the slots where the dash pad goes and just replace the bottom part? That way you can tack it in a couple of places at the slots so it would be tight but still be easy to remove if you ever wanted to. You wouldn't have to mess with the spot welds & the dash pad would cover the cut/tack welded area. Just a thought.
