It is also recommended that you flush the system. Manufacturers call for a flush every year, I recommend every other year. This is because brake fluid absorbs water and is easily contaminated. To do this, bleed each cylinder until clean fluid comes out.
As for fluid type, go with either DOT3 or 4. DOT5 is a silicon base, and requires replacement of all rubber in the system.
It will take most of a quart to flush your system. If you buy a quart bottle and don't use it all, don't keep it around. The fluid will absorb the water from the air that enters the water. I would buy 2 or 3 of the small bottles.
