an old gear box that is badly worn will ABSOLUTELY affect you steering. other factors that are just as important:
a-arm bushings
inner tie rods
outer tie rods
pitman arm
idler arm
ball joints
rag joint
power steering pump/belt/hoses.
the steering system is pretty much all inclusive. if anything fails, it will cause others to fail prematurely. domino effect almost.
if in doubt, replace parts. better safe than sorry.
