I bought my 66 Chevelle race car with 3 1/2" Dynomax straight through race mufflers and side exit pipes...way too loud for the street. So, I had custom exhaust done all the way back out under the bumper using 3" tubes and straight-through magnaflows. The car doesn't seem to have suffered from the increase in backpressure and it sounds great. Obviously this car doesn't get driven in the rain so I am not concerned about rust.
I have 2 chamber flowmasters with 2-1/2" tails on my 71 Cheyenne 350. I do like the sound of them except that there is a sweet (or not so sweet) spot around 1800 to 3000rpm where those flows boom the cab. My wife says she can hear me coming a block away (on a completely stock, worn out 350). I like the sound though (tone not volume).
This probably isn't helping much but, when I change my motor in my Cheyenne to a big block I will most likely go to magnaflows.
