When you ordered the new sending unit, did you use your known good float again, or did you use the float they sent with the unit. I have had nothing but bad luck with newer floats getting holes in them Now I solder and test them for a few days before I even install them You could have a bad float... again. There are other possibilities, but I would check the float again.
