I helped install PS on a truck without the indent. We used a torch, a couple of clamps, a chunk of solid steel and a BFH to make an indent.

I understand that you can space the gear box using washers, but that it takes away from the structural integrity of the steering column or something like that.

Fortunately, my 68 had the indent when I upgraded.
