I removed the cables also, way better in the long run. It worked well to let the lube self-soak with the cables hung up in a u-shape so he lube could penetrate all the way. I used miro-mist and 2 years later they still work as smoothly as the day I put them back together.
If you're pulling out the controls, instal the upgraded top(?) lever while you have it out. I think ECE sells it.
