my under standing is the off-set hole is to move the diff back. when you flip the axle to the top of the springs it moves it closer to the transmission, so to keep the slip joint from bottoming out during suspension travel, the diff is moved back 3/4" IIRC

to correct pinion angle, the u is uneven, or with the better kits, it is adjustable
