I did mine like the link 1970 Chevy Truck posted.

Took maybe 10 minutes, tops.
I bought a flat plug for the alternator @ the local auto supply, cust was under $10.
I works like a charm.

My biggest problem was the external regulator is mounted under the auxiliary battery tray, so access to it was a bit of a mofo.
