Plan on the motor not being a 400. These are often 305 motors, people lie. A 350 would be good...
Go to mortec.com, print out some numbers and look at the block casting numbers to see what you have there.
Check out the trans. Its probably not too bad an option, but it could be a PG, which you don't want more than likely. I think a PG has a square pan? A sort of square trans pan with a notch is likely a 350. One shaped sort of like Ohio is a 400. A 700 or 400 trans could look like one of the above, but I don't look much these days.
A carb (new), intake and dist will double the price with your labor to install. Used will work if you can find a carb to rebuild or have one.
I don't want to be gloomy, just realistic...
The question is, is it worth it to you to put another motor and/or trans in it as well as what it needs? I have way more in mine, so I'm just jealous I guess

72lb4x4, I will have my tired 350 and 350 trans out of my 72 when I finally do the engine swap on it. I was thinking that I could salvage the crank (if it is a 400). Can anyone say 383 stroker?
