The heads of the tack hammers are magnetic.
The upholsterer would put a bunch of upholstery tacks in his mouth, pointy end 1st, to hold them and then just "attach" a tack to the hammer; drive the tack & then attach another.
That way he had a free hand for stretching/pulling the material tight.
