The upholsterer would put a bunch of upholstery tacks in his mouth, pointy end 1st, to hold them and then just "attach" a tack to the hammer; drive the tack & then attach another.
That way he had a free hand for stretching/pulling the material tight.

The head of the one i have isn't magnetic, but has a slight "notch" in it to hold the tack so it can be started with a slight tap, then turn the hammer around to finish the job.
