The standard manual tranny for our trucks is an SM465 4 speed. GM stuck it in pickups from 1968 or so until the mid 80s or later. It's nearly bulletproof and easy to find. The other common 4 speed you'll find is an SM420. It's older, with the reverse down and to the left, instead of to the right and down, like the 465.

although the Powerglide is sort of an odd automatic transmission because it has only two speeds, it is still a good transmission, and racers like them.
