You plug the heat riser holes in the intake under the carb? I used to thread mine and put allen head pipe plugs in them. The exhaust will cross over under the manifold and provide heat but not pressure at the carb base gasket. Used to be a major problem with causing vacuum leaks when that base gasket blew out.
