With the A/C on (all levers to the left) your passenger kick panel door should be open, allowing for air recirculation. If not, your output volume at the vents will suffer tremendously. Your cowl panel door under the hood should be closed (keeping outside air from mixing in, and driving up the temp of the air you are trying to cool). The heater by-pass valve on your inner fender should also close to prevent the heater core from heating up and defeating the A/C.
With the heat/defrost on, your kick panel vent door should close, and the cowl vent door should open, allowing for outside air to come in and be heated by the heater core. The by-pass valve should also open and allow anti-freeze to flow thru the heater core
