Bad battery. Your battery shorted a cell or two when you short circuited the wiring. Now the alternator is putting out way too much current trying to charge the dead battery which in turn makes the belt slip. If it was a fuel injected vehicle it probably would not run at all. What is the battery voltage with and without the engine running?
