I usually take out all but the last 3/4" at the bottom of the cross piece (up against the bed floor). The notch would need to be as long as the spring assembly and the bolt is, so that there is clearance on both ends of the notch. After cutting a notch into the corsspiece and leaving the last 3/4 inch of metal, I use a piece channel iron or a square tubing cut in half to bolster up the cross pice, so that I do not loose that strength in it. I then drill three bolt holes through the cross piece and the tubing and bolt it together making the notch stronger.
